New Smart System Management Module Brings Compact Size and Enhanced Versatility to System Chassis
December 18, 2002
Tracewell Systems, Inc., a world-class electronic packaging manufacturer, has introduced the System Management Module (SMM), an intelligent monitoring board that is programmable for full system monitoring capabilities. This highly versatile unit is a stand-alone, platform-independent module that is being integrated into the company's standard and custom system chassis. The SMM can monitor critical system elements including voltages, temperatures, current, and fan speed and report present status and alarm conditions via RS-232, Ethernet, and I2C communications links, plus VFD/LCD or LED output. The RS-232 and Ethernet interfaces allow the SMM to be connected to any processor board via a standard port. The I2C interface is provided for implementations requiring system management using IPMI protocol and for communication with optional peripherals.
In the past, this set of functions was typically assembled from a collection of dedicated boards wired together, instead of one microprocessor-based device that measures just 5 x 1.5 x 1 inch. Similar functionality from other suppliers would cost about twice the SMM's low price and lack the SMM's flexibility.
All functions of this flexible board, including voltage ranges, function of I/O ports, and more are preprogrammed at the factory per customer requirements.
The unit provides a generous set of inputs and outputs that can be augmented with satellite boards for additional functionality. The base board can monitor up to eight points for over- and under-voltage (values set by software), up to four fans, up to three temperature sensors, DC OK and AC OK inputs, and other digital inputs. Outputs include one multi-purpose LED indicator output, up to two open-collector outputs, and one form C relay output. Bidirectional inputs and outputs include up to two I2C serial ports, one RS-232 port, and eight general-purpose I/O ports.
Optional Peripherals. Available satellite modules include speed control for up to 16 fans (four fans per device), a 10/100Base-T Ethernet controller, an current monitor (up to four voltages per device), a remote temperature sensor interfaced via I2C, and a choice of VFD or LCD display.
Price and Availability. Tracewell’s SMM typically adds $495 to the price of a system, and is available now. For information on retrofitting existing systems, contact the company.
