New, Rugged VXI Chassis is Lightweight and High Strength

August 4, 2004

Tracewell Systems, Inc. announces the RHP 11-slot high power VXI chassis. The RHP features rugged construction, high power plugging cooling modules, and RS-485 monitoring, making it ideal for the latest generation of high performance VXI applications. Building on a long history of VXI systems, the Tracewell RHP was designed for systems requiring low weight, high strength, and high power. Two models are available, differing in power supply output levels.

Rugged construction. Advanced laminate welded construction combines lightweight materials to provide an extremely rigid structure. As well as adding strength and reducing weight, these methods also provide improved shock resilience.

Backplane. The RHP’s 11 slot high-current VXI ‘C’ size monolithic backplane features active automatic bus-grant and IACK jumpering, active termination, and 96 pin high current DIN connectors. High frequency decoupling is provided at each slot, along with bulk distributed low frequency decoupling.

Power supply. The RHP features a rear plugging AC front end and either one or two front plugging DC power modules. The Model RHP-1, with one DC power module, is rated for 1460 W, while the Model RHP-2 has two modules and a combined rating of 2.2kW. This distributed power system provides exceptional transient response, regulation, and fault tolerance. To manage this power, the backplane uses unique power routing and high current connectors. AC input power factor is 0.99 with power factor correction.

Cooling system. The ducted cooling system provides high volume and pressure performance. A high-pressure plugging fan module provides 450 cfm at 0.4 in. H2O, making the RHP ideal for high-density analog and digital VXI modules. Rear intake and top exhaust minimize the number of airflow turns for greater flow efficiency. The rear plugging fan panel also allows easy access for service or maintenance, with MTTR of less than 1 minute.

Monitoring. An RS-485 monitor (brought out via a rear-panel RS-485 D9 connector) tracks VXI voltage (+5, +3.3, +12, -12 VDC; at backplane), fan voltage (+12 VDC), fan speed, intake (one sensor) and exhaust temperature (two sensors); typical measurement accuracy is within 1%.

Accessories. Filler panels and slot air blocks are available for vacant 6U slots. VXI receiver mounting options are also available.

Price and Availability. Pricing for the RHP-1.5KW starts at $11,245 (min quantity 5 units), and availability is 8 – 10 weeks ARO.
